Today is Flag Day in the United States of America!
We celebrate this anniversary when John Adams introduced a resolution before Congress mandating a United States flag, stating, “…that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
The first United States flag, displaying 13 stripes and stars representing the original 13 colonies. Americans are internationally famous for flying our flag at every opportunity. Nicknames for the proudly exhibited flag are “Old Glory” and “Stars and Stripes.”
On June 1, 1796, Tennessee became the 16th state, and the United States added a 16th star to the flag.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” was written by Francis Scott Key on September 14, 1814. Scott Key was inspired to write the song after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry just before the end of the War of 1812. Scott Key was inspired by the flag flying triumphantly above the fort after the battle. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was finally officially confirmed as our national anthem on March 3, 1931.
Come to Blount Mansion for a tour and see a United States of America flag with the 16 stars!
